Checking The Stock - HDR/Tone-Mapped (Blended)

Checking The Stock - HDR/Tone-Mapped (Blended)

In St Jacobs, Ontario is a store named 'Artefacts' selling salvaged materials mostly from old houses and intended for use either in renovations of interior decorating. Shown here is the store attendant checking on stock in the area displaying door knobs, keys, handles, drawer pulls, etc., a mix of original antique components and reproductions of antique designs. The mix of items is hard to appreciate without visiting the store. So if your 150 year old house need an old key for that door lock you actually want to use, it may be worth a visit here. - JW

This image was processed in HDR software but since it was a single image, only the tone-mapping portion of the software came into play. Hence the image is tone-mapped and not strictly HDR and this tone-mapped image was used in the processing described below.

The original image was shot using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 12-24mm lense set to 17mm, ISO800, full auto (no flash) mode, f/4.0, 1/30sec. HDR processing (to use the tone-mapped portion on the single image) was done using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as shown below. PP in GIMP: Loaded the original and the tone-mapped images as layers with the original on top, and then blended them by setting the opacity of the original to 50%, after which I used the new layer as a base. I then did a tone curve adjustment to expand tonal range and get a more 'realistic' tonal range, applied an 'S' curve to deepen colours, slight contrast increase, reduced the slight green cast from the lighting somewhat using colour balance control, sharpened, added border and scaled to 1024 wide for posting.

Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 tonemapping parameters:
Operator: Mantiuk
Contrast Mapping factor: 0.3
Saturation Factor: 1.2
Detail Factor: 1
PreGamma: 1

"Tartan State of Mind," a new Men's team puck wall

"Tartan State of Mind," a new Men's team puck wall

On our floor at work, there is a display wall that the teams take turns decorating for a couple of months each. Many of us on the Men's apparel design team worked on this for the past few days.

We had seen a screen print of the US states arranged in a heart, and were inspired to recreate it in floor-to-ceiling scale with all the states filled with traditional Tartan plaids. Since we are the lounge/basics team, plaids are so important for us during the holiday time frame - we make all the men's lounge pants and robes and PJ Sets. Alan, the textile designer I work with, re-created all these traditional Tartan plaids in Kaledo (a fabric/pattern software), and I filled all the states with the plaid repeats in Illustrator. The print-outs were spray-mounted to and cut from 1/4" foam core by a bunch of REALLY dedicated volunteers on the men's team. Damn those rivers and gulfs! We painted the background foamcore panels with Behr color "Greensleeves," which is a perfect holiday color complement to the Target red walls that are everywhere on our floor.

SOOO worth it in the end - we got the whole thing installed tonight, including the key which tells viewers which state is filled with which traditional Tartan plaid.
